Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
